About Matthew Fairbank Design

Our Mission is to collaborate with designers and homeowners, creating durable works of furniture and lighting, while meeting their aesthetic and functional goals.

Our Perspective is informed by the modernist principle of form follows function. Decoration is integrated rather than applied. Where and how things are made is fundamental to bettering our society.

Our Experience and Expertise ranges from large scale lighting installations to expanding dining tables that seat many guests. Our design team is here to help you make the FF&E specification process easier.

Our Approach is collaborative and detailed. We understand that each project and designer preference is unique. This drives us to strategize from the ground up, working closely with clients to meet their requirements. An in-depth discussion of the application of furniture, lighting, finishes, lumens output, storage needs, lead time, and installation requirements is fundamental to success. This approach builds trusting relationships and keeps us in a constant state of creative discovery.

Our Network of collaborating professionals, formed through 14 years of practice, includes interior designers, architects, glass blowers, stone carvers, metal smiths and artisans who share our vision.

We are based in Brooklyn, NY and build every order in our own studio. We collaborate on an international scale. This brings us into meaningful contact with communities other than our own.

Matthew Fairbank
Founder & Design Director

Matthew founded his eponymous furniture and lighting company more than 14 years ago. Originally from Shamong, NJ, Matthew has called New York City his home since 2003. He studied Furniture Design at the Rhode Island School of Design. His mother, a proprietor of an antiques store, inspired his love for the industrial arts at an early age. His career matured in New York, fabricating visual merchandising displays for luxury brands, designing hotel interiors and a children’s furniture collection. He has drawn from these experiences when creating his statement lighting pieces, custom tables, and one-of-kind case-goods.

At the beginning of a project, Matthew meditates on the following questions:

How can I create designs in my own voice, inspired by history, but resisting the urge to imitate it?
How can decoration and beauty be integral to the piece, rather than superficially applied?
How can functional art unite our community and bring prosperity to those we employ?
His company is committed to using the finest materials and workmanship to create furniture and lighting that will be treasured for years.
